Growing worldwide demand and shortages of world fuel supplies will result in higher fuel prices. Jordan, more than ever, needs a secure domestic supply of fuel to power homes and businesses and meet rising local demand.
One very promising indigenous energy source in Jordan is oil shale, with reserves estimated to be 75 billion tons. Production of shale oil will greatly enhance Jordan’s energy security as it decreases its reliance on imported crude oil, reducing its energy bill and driving its economy. The government treasury will benefit greatly through royalties on production and sharing of revenues and profits. This increased income for the government will trickle down to the average citizen through improved public and social services.
Jordan’s oil shale industry is already very attractive to international investors with over 16 companies already operating or applying for concessions. Jordanian oil shale is particularly of high grade because of its high organic matter and oil content. More crucially, its suitability for surface mining and geographical locations away from centers of population make it more feasible to exploit.
